Introduction

A nuclear reactor controls and produces the release of energy from splitting the atoms of certain elements. In a nuclear power reactor, the energy released is used as heat to make steam to generate electricity. In the U.S. they're two types of nuclear reactors, one is the pressurized water reactor and the boiling water reactor. As seen in these pictures to the bottom and on

History


The search for a type of nuclear energy for power began soon after the discovery in the early 20th century that radioactive elements, such as radium, released immense amounts of energy, according to the principle of mass energy equivalence. In 1932, James Chadwick discovered the neutron which was immediately recognized as a needed tool for nuclear power because it didn't have an electric charge. After world war II nuclear power was mainly used for the race of arms and power in the cold war. The USSR had the first nuclear power plant on June 27, 1954 called Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant. The U.S. also made one the following year, and more and more would soon be found around the world leading up to today's nuclear power.

There is a total of 65 nuclear power plants in the US and have a total of 104 nuclear reactors. There are 3 nuclear power plants in New Jersey with a total of 4 nuclear reactors.
The boiling water reactor heats water which creates steam that powers the steam turbine, where the pressurized water reactor that heats water and exchanges

the hot water with a lower pressured system which then turns it into steam and drives the turbine.

A breeder reactor is is a nuclear reactor that can produce materials that are capable of sustaining a chain reaction of nuclear fission.
The waste created from nuclear reactors is highly radioactive which means it is very dangerous, this waste is usually left over from the nuclear reactors.

Most spent fuel from nuclear power plants is stored in cylindrical concrete structures with water or steel on the inside.

Vitrification would be turning the waste into a solid, so it is easier to handle.
The other permanent ways to store this waste would be to bury under sea, or send it into space, both of which is risky.
